Leonard Rickhard (born 1945) is one of Norway's key living painters. He studied at Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole in 1966-67 and at Statens Kunstakademi in 1967 - 71. His career has seen early solo exhibitions at Kunstnerforbundet (both 1974 and '77) and later with retrospective shows at the Astrup Fearnly Museum of Modern Art as well as SKMU. In 2009 he was chosen as the festival artist of 2009 in Bergen Kunsthall.
He has been received several prizes among them 'Ridder av 1. Klasse av St. Olavs Orden" and the Prince Eugen Medal.
Common motifs in his works are birch forests, interior scenes – often seen trough half open doors, industrial machinery, land surveyors, model plane kits, and ornithologists. Often noted for the sense of tranquility in his paintings, there is nevertheless a subtle sense of unease in many of his works.
